Denali National Park Wildlife Safety & Education Volunteers

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

The Savage River Area is a hotspot for human-wildlife interactions in Denali National Park and Preserve. We're looking for a few volunteers who can work independently and interact with visitors in a busy place, deliver often times complex information and perform a variety of duties from informal interpretation to traffic/parking control.


These volunteers will work at the Savage River Area to help educate visitors in appropriate behavior in wilderness and when encountering wildlife, namely bears, as well as dispense general park and area information.


This is a uniformed position, the volunteer is required to wear the Denali National Park and Preserve volunteer uniform.


Primary duties include:


-Providing park visitors information about the park, trail, shuttle bus and road systems, natural history, and recreational opportunities through informal interpretive contacts

-Protecting park resources by helping visitors understand park regulations and safety information.

-Assisting park staff by staffing the Savage River Parking Area, as well as roving the popular trails within one mile of the respective trailheads.

-Reporting emergencies, missing persons, or law enforcement concerns to park staff.

-Helping with traffic control, litter pick-up, minor maintenance tasks, and other duties as needed.

-Assisting with visitor concerns and emergencies where possible.

-Promoting ethical wildlife watching practices.

-Encouraging visitor compliance with closures.

-Conveying bear/wildlife safety messages to the public in accordance with the park's Bear-Human Conflict Management Plan.

-Reporting to the Alaska Region Communication Center (ARCC), following its protocols for radio use and procedures, including calling into service, calling out of service, reporting incidents, requesting assistance, etc.

-Utilizing good teamwork abilities with other volunteers and park staff.



Housing (RV site with full hook-ups) and some funds for reimbursement of expenses are available.
