Alliance for Smiles
2025 Events & Operations Intern
www.allianceforsmiles.org
Alliance for Smiles is a non-profit organization that provides free cleft surgeries for children in underserved parts of the world. This role helps with two key ways of making this possible:
- Day to day, we make international medical missions happen with our amazing volunteers. This includes prepping, packing, and more!
- To fund this life-changing work and to recognize some of the individuals who make this work possible, we host an annual "Night of Smiles" gala in downtown San Francisco.
Through this internship, you will be part of making our transformative, life-changing missions happen, and you’ll be part of coordinating our most fun & festive event of the year!
About the Internship Role:
This flexible, part-time role involves supporting the planning and coordination of our flagship gala, as well as operational and logistical support for our amazing medical missions. Most tasks can be done remotely, though you should plan to be available in the office during the weeks just before the event and especially on the night of it (Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco), when we will all be on-site to enjoy and support the festivities.
We have staff, committee members, and external volunteers who also support the smooth and fun execution of our missions and gala, so you will be part of a great crew and a very fun event.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Gala Item Donation & Sponsorship Outreach: help reach out to local individuals and businesses to have items/experiences donated, which will become prizes for our raffle and silent auction, and reach out to potential gala sponsors
- Gala Coordination Support: help out before, during, and after the event; this can include helping with planning & ideas, decorating, volunteer management, set-up, and tear-down
- Administrative & Operational Support: Assist with preparation for medical missions, create and manage medical records, organize supplies, and conduct outreach to hospitals, volunteers, and partners.
Because we are a small but mighty team, we all wear a lot of hats, but part of the beauty of AfS is that everyone steps up to help out and support one another as a team, and we all have a great time while doing it! We’re excited to welcome folks onboard who love learning new skills and helping children around the world get the surgeries they need.
Interns can be provided an AfS laptop as needed, and are always welcome to desk space in our office in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, though we host many of our meetings via Zoom so people can join from anywhere. We are also very flexible about working from home.
Our office is located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco at 2565 Third Street, Suite 237 and the gala/event will take place in downtown San Francisco, so the best fit person for this role should be within easy access of these areas.
About You

About Alliance for Smiles
Alliance for Smiles is a registered 501c3 nonprofit with a mission to forever improve and transform the lives of children and communities impacted by cleft lip and palate by providing free, comprehensive treatment while training and equipping local medical teams to provide quality, long-term care.
Children born with cleft conditions in many countries face many physical and social challenges. The solution is a relatively quick surgery (often around one hour) after which the children’s lives and opportunities are transformed forever. Unfortunately, most do not live in areas where trained surgeons are available, and if they do, surgeries are often unaffordable to most families.
That’s where Alliance for Smiles (AfS) comes in, undertaking medical missions to offer free surgeries for children impacted by cleft lip and palate in underserved regions of the world, training the local medical teams that serve them, and establishing and equipping local Treatment Centers to provide long-term, sustainable care for these patients.
AfS and its medical missions are powered by a lean team and board, along with almost one thousand volunteers. We’d love for you to join our team in this meaningful mission!
A diverse and inclusive workplace where we learn from each other is an integral part of AfS culture. We actively welcome people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a great place to work. Join us and help us achieve our life-changing mission!
