Under One Roof Fiber Arts is a program of Sub-Saharan Youth & Family Services in Minnesota. We are dedicated to teaching sewing and fiber arts to African immigrant women in the Twin Cities. We are committed to offering positive & encouraging instruction to students, and we believe that sharing sewing & craft knowledge is a great way to build & strengthen community. Currently, the majority of our classes are focused on sewing, and it's time to change up that ratio. We've got a bunch of donated yarn, we've got students who want to learn how to knit and crochet cute and/or practical things--all we need is a few volunteers who can show them how to do it.

  • The immediate need is beginner-level classes focused on easy projects like scarves and granny squares, but knowing our students, we'll be onto intermediate and advanced projects before too long.
  • We are looking for both teachers and teacher's aides--we aim to have 2-3 volunteers assigned to each class we offer so that no one feels overwhelmed.
  • Because these will be new classes, scheduling is flexible, limited only by whether enough students are available and sign up. We aim for 4-6 students to a class.
  • Ideally you will have some experience with teaching, whether that's leading classes or just teaching a friend how to knit or crochet. Training and support will be provided at whatever level is needed for you to feel prepared and confident to lead or assist a class.
  • UOR provides all materials and tools needed for classes, so you won't have to worry about supply lists or students coming to class without the supplies that they need.

Most of our students are originally from Sub-Saharan Africa (primarily Somalia and Ethiopia), so you must be comfortable working with people who speak English as a second (or 3rd/4th/5th) language. If you speak Somali, Oromo, or Amharic, even better!
