Campground Host-Westside Ranger District

ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

The Caribou - Targhee National Forest Westside RD is seeking individuals or couples to host at Scout Mountain Campground, Malad Summit Campground, Big Springs Campground, and Curlew Campground.

Hosts will be responsible for interacting with the visiting public, providing information about rules and regulations, posting reservation signs in a timely manner, camp cleanup, and general maintenance.

A self-contained RV or travel trailer will be required from the host. All host sites include sewer hookup, potable water, picnic table, and a fire ring. Malad Summit and Curlew Campground host sites have an electrical hookup. Scout Mountain and Big Springs campground host sites will need to provide their own power source. Hosts will need a vehicle that can travel on gravel and dirt roads and be used to conduct campground maintenance. Hosts will receive reimbursement for incidental expenses at $22/day and for official mileage (0.67 per mile) directly related to campground maintenance.

Training will be provided to complete tasks to Forest Service maintenance and safety standards. A USFS Volunteer uniform, tools, and campground supplies will be provided.


Campground Information

  • Big Springs Campground : Located 50 miles from Pocatello, Idaho. The site is nestled between large spruce and pine trees and has access to many recreational opportunities such as hiking, ATV riding, and fishing. A self-guided nature trail is conveniently located for visitors to use. The Pebble rental cabin is located a few minutes below the campground. Hosts will be required to clean the cabin and report any maintenance issues. Lava Hot Springs also provides fun opportunities and fuel just 16 miles away.


  • Scout Mountain Campground : Located just 13 miles South from Pocatello, Idaho. The site is in a shaded forest with great views of Scout Mountain and a nearby stream. The site is part of the Mink Creek recreational area and has access to many recreational opportunities such as many multi-use trails for biking, hiking and motorized use, bird watching and horseback riding. Mink Creek Group Site is located nearby on the Mink Creek road and can be reserved online. Hosts will help maintain this group site by cleaning restrooms and mowing lawn.


  • Curlew Campground : Located just 10 miles from Holbrook, Idaho. The host site is situated in a grove of trees, providing shade during the summer months and has excellent cell service. The site is located near the Stone Reservoir and has access to many recreational opportunities such as fishing, ATV riding, and horseback riding. The reservoir is closed to watercraft.


  • Malad Summit Campground : This site is situated near a small stream and provides shade throughout the summer months. Popular recreational opportunities include, hiking, ATV riding and fishing for trout. Malad, Idaho is just 15 miles away and offers groceries, fuel and restaurants. The Malad Summit rental guard station is located a few minutes below the campground. Hosts will be required to clean the cabin and report any maintenance issues.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Volunteer a minimum of 3-6 hours a day/20-30 hours weekly and be available other times for public interactions.
  • Hosts will be expected to work weekends and holidays.
  • Volunteers need to be able to conduct light physical work in an outdoor setting such as cleaning campsites and bathrooms, emptying firepits, replacing signs, pushing wheelbarrows/wagons and doing light vegetation management around the campsite.

Preferred Candidates:

  • Outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills to make daily public contacts
  • Maintain daily written logs.
  • Ability to interact with diverse visitors with a positive attitude informing them of rules and regulations.

Campground host volunteer positions are accepted as long as positions are vacant. Additional applications will be retained for a waitlist, in case we have an unexpected vacancy for one of the host locations.
