California Civil Liberties Advocacy (CCLA) is seeking passionate and skilled Legislative Advocates to represent our organization at the California State Capitol. This vital role involves lobbying state legislators, monitoring legislation, drafting advocacy materials, and testifying at committee hearings to advance our mission of protecting civil liberties. Legislative Advocates will work closely with the Legislative Director and collaborate with policymakers, stakeholders, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advocate for civil liberties by lobbying state legislators and regulatory bodies.
- Draft policy proposals, position statements, and advocacy letters.
- Monitor and analyze legislation relevant to civil liberties and provide updates to the team.
- Testify at committee hearings and represent CCLA at legislative meetings.
- Build and maintain relationships with legislators, staff, and stakeholders.
- Assist in organizing and participating in advocacy campaigns and events.
Qualifications:
- Background in law, politics, government, or related fields (preferred but not required).
- Strong communication and public speaking skills.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Passion for civil liberties and social justice.
- Availability on Tuesdays for legislative hearings and flexible hours as needed.

- Emerging Technologies: Supported AB 2320 (2016) to ban drone misuse.
- Racial Profiling: Advocated for AB 953 (2015), creating the Racial and Identity Profiling Act.
- Privacy Protections: Co-sponsored SB 34 & SB 741 (2015) to regulate ALPRs and stingray devices.
- Fair Housing: Helped pass AB 686 (2017) to combat housing discrimination.
- Law Enforcement Transparency: Backed AB 748 (2017) for timely body camera footage release.
- Discrimination: Lobbied for the CROWN Act (SB 188, 2019) to ban race-based hair discrimination.
- Sentencing Reform: Supported SB 73 (2021) to address inequities in drug offense sentencing.
- Mental Health: Advocated for AB 2017 (2016) to fund college mental health services.
