ORGANIZATION: MOUNT WILSON INSTITUTE

Mount Wilson Observatory relies on dedicated volunteers to support this historic facility’s mission. Many important positions require no special skills or education - just a love of history, astronomy, nature, or the arts. Volunteer opportunities are available mostly on weekends, during the months of May through October. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Special Event Assistants: Mount Wilson hosts a series of concerts in the 100-inch telescope dome, science lectures in the Museum auditorium followed by telescope viewing sessions, and other special events. May-October. Located at the Observatory.

Member RelationsandOffice Assistants: Help process questions and requests, package and ship materials, update membership lists, and perform other needed tasks. Year-round opportunities located in Pasadena on occasional weekdays.

Observatory Technical Support: Provide support in maintaining the observatory sites in an operational status. This involves fixing electrical and mechanical problems as well as implementing long term upgrades.

We also have opportunities in Grounds/Maintenance, and in our Grades 4-12 STEM program.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mount Wilson Institute is to manage and promote the Mount Wilson Observatory for scientific research, historic preservation, education, public engagement, and the arts.

Description

Located on Mount Wilson, a 5,710-foot peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, California, the Observatory was conceived and founded by George Ellery Hale in 1904. The home of some of the most important telescopes in the development of modern astronomy - including the two largest telescopes of their time - it is a site of significant scientific and Los Angeles history. The Observatory and grounds are open to the public to visit, and during the spring and summer hosts public programs including observing through the historic telescopes, lectures, concerts, educational programs, and more.
