Hijas de Tonantzin is a healthy development curriculum that educates and trains female (all feminine energies) youth ages 12-24 on emotional wellness, independent living, life skills, and spiritual and cultural growth. The framework is grounded in indigenous concepts, focusing on empowerment while training participants to becomes leaders in their communities. The workshops are group discussion and experiential based as well as ocassional guest speakers . Each cohort is 12 weeks and the sessions are 2 hours per week. Participants have the option of becoming facilitators for the incoming cohort.

The mission of the Chicano Youth Center is to promote cultural awareness, understanding, and respect for ethnic diversity through the provision of comprehensive services in education, youth empowerment, and leadership development, designed to meet the needs of youth and their families.

Description

The center was originally founded in 1976 on the campus of California State University, Fresno by a group of students in a social work club. Throughout its 48 year history. the organization has maintained a strong spirt of volunteerism to better meet the needs of a growing and diverse youth population. The organization is comprised of a volunteer staff including student interns and an executive director. This multicultural agency is language competent and fluent in Spanish and English. It is the HUB of community activities in the immediate Lowell and Jefferson Neighborhoods.
