Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. With over 85 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.
Visitor Services Assistants serve as front-line representatives of the park, helping interpretive rangers with front desk duties and daily visitor center operations.
Main Duties
- Assist with visitor center opening/closing procedures.
- Welcome visitors as they enter the visitor center, keeping a tally of how many visitors enter.
- Give accurate directions to trailheads, parking areas, historic sites, landmarks, and other park features using park maps.
- Keep maps, brochures, and other materials well-stocked in the appropriate locations.
- Following the processes outlined in Front Desk Standard Operating Procedures, correctly take reservations for tours, backcountry campsites, and picnic shelters both in-person and over the phone.
- Occasionally assist park staff with interpretive programs and events.
- Other duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Preferred: Previous experience in customer service and/or visitor information.
- Comfortably stand/sit in one location for extended periods of time.
- Commit to at least one (4-hour) shift per week.
- Read, understand, and interpret park maps and other printed materials and accurately communicate information to visitors.
- Communicate effectively with park staff and work as a member of a team.
- Arrive ON TIME at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the Volunteer Coordinator(s).
- Respect the park's equipment and use it properly, as demonstrated during training/orientation.
- Wear an official volunteer uniform (provided) for the duration of volunteer duties.
- Behave in a professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.
