Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Visitor Services Hatchery Host
ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Please visit the new page to apply.
The Volunteer Host position at Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is a vital part of a Visitor Services (VS) team delivering high quality public service. Here is a list of duties typically associated with the position:
· Staff the Visitor Center between 8 and 4:30, when possible, to greet and orient visitors, covering weekends by arrangement with the VS Team. A typical schedule is Friday-Monday; but this is negotiable.
· Provide short tours when possible.
· At the end of the day, go around the site and close/lock any open gates and doors. The door leading to the trails should always be unlocked; but everything else should be closed. We’ll provide an electric golf cart for you to use.
· Help water the pollinator garden (as needed).
· Greet visitors everywhere on the grounds while promoting and modeling good, neighborly behavior. For example, dogs and other pets must be on leash everywhere on the site; but often people do not follow the rule. We remind them of their responsibility.
Events:
· Various educational programs take place at LNFH and Entiat NFH and occasionally elsewhere. If you have an interest, help is always welcome.
· June 14 is Winthrop Kids Fishing Day at Winthrop NFH. We’d love to have your help. Winthrop is a fun place to visit!
· Wenatchee River Salmon Festival is Sept. 18-20. We need help with setting up the week before, running the show, and cleaning up afterwards. If you want a higher level of involvement, like leading kids activities, that’d be excellent!
Outdoor Visitor Services Improvements:
There’s pretty much an endless list, but here are some higher priority cases:
· Inventory supplies such as snow shoes, waders and other educational materials
· Assemble sign bases and install in pollinator garden.
· Remove old outdated signs.
· Move some of the interpretive signs along the Nature Trail.
· Troubleshoot irrigation near pollinator garden.
· Plan and build a welcoming gateway for near the entrance.
· Build and install more of these gateways elsewhere on the premises, to welcome and guide visitors.
The sky's the limit when it comes to projects here. We welcome your ideas on how you can improve the visitor experience and support hatchery operations!

Mission Statement
Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.
The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.
The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
