Basic Description:
The trail ambassador’s primary duty is to assist Forest Service recreation staff in maintaining trails and providing high quality recreational opportunities for visitors. Trail ambassadors may work on motorized or non-motorized trail systems. Trail ambassadors may work independently or alongside recreation staff. Positions are available across the Huron-Manistee National Forests.
Major Duties:
- Removing litter, debris, and vegetation growth from trails
- Replacing and updating signs and trail markers along trails
- Maintaining trailheads which could include painting signs, updating information kiosks, restocking brochures, picking up trash, grass cutting, and routine bathroom cleaning
- Reporting any dead, downed, or otherwise hazardous trees to recreation staff
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Willingness to keep records of volunteer hours worked (volunteer timesheet)
- Interacting tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately with the public, Forest Service staff, fellow-volunteers, and other agencies or contractors
- Adaptability to changing priorities, weather events, and special work requests
Physical Demands:
This work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 20 pounds or more. This work requires average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment:
This work is performed in a forest environment where the terrain may be uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation. Temperatures may range from hot and humid to dry and cool. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered.

Work Schedule:
The greatest season of need is May to October. Tasks outside of that timeframe may be available but are less regular. Please work with your local ranger district contact to determine an appropriate schedule for your interests and availability.
Safety:
The Recreation Site Steward will be expected to review and adhere to all applicable safety requirements set forth for duties performed (JHAs). This work requires the use of safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, and hardhats. Tools, equipment, and PPE is provided by the Forest Service. Long pants, long-sleeves, and appropriate footwear to be provided by volunteer as applicable.
Next Steps:
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be contacted as volunteer work projects are identified by Forest Service staff. A volunteer agreement must be signed by the applicant and the Authorized Officer before any volunteer work can commence.
The applicant will be responsible for transportation to and from the site unless other arrangements are made. This is an unpaid position; housing is not provided. If seeking academic credit, we will work with the applicant to fulfill necessary requirements.
