ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Basic Description:

The Recreation Site Steward’s primary duty is to assist Forest Service recreation staff in maintaining recreation sites and providing high quality recreational opportunities for visitors. Recreation volunteers may work at developed or dispersed recreation sites. Recreation volunteers may work independently or alongside recreation staff.

Major Duties:

· Assists recreation staff in maintaining developed and dispersed recreation sites which could include routine bathroom cleaning, campsite cleanup (trash pick-up, fire ring cleaning), grass cutting, weed eating, and other basic maintenance tasks.

· Repairing minor damage of recreation signs, information signboards, picnic tables, toilets buildings, and other minor structures

· Reporting any repair needs or hazards to recreation staff

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

· Willingness to keep records of volunteer hours worked (volunteer timesheet)

· Interacting tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately with the public, Forest Service staff, fellow-volunteers, and other agencies or contractors

· Adaptability to changing priorities, weather events, and special work requests

Physical Demands:

This work requires walking, standing, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 20 pounds or more. This work requires average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment:

This work is performed in a forest environment where the terrain may be uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation. Temperatures may range from hot and humid to dry and cool. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered.

Work Season and Schedule:

The greatest season of need is May to October. Tasks outside of that timeframe may be available but are less regular. Please work with your local ranger district contact to determine an appropriate schedule for your interests and availability.

Safety:

The Recreation Site Steward will be expected to review and adhere to all applicable safety requirements set forth for duties performed (JHAs). This work requires the use of safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, and hardhats. Tools, equipment, and PPE is provided by the Forest Service. Long pants, long-sleeves, and appropriate footwear to be provided by volunteer as applicable.

Next Steps:

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be contacted as volunteer work projects are identified by Forest Service staff. A volunteer agreement must be signed by the applicant and the Authorized Officer before any volunteer work can commence.


The applicant will be responsible for transportation to and from the site unless other arrangements are made. This is an unpaid position; housing is not provided. If seeking academic credit, we will work with the applicant to fulfill necessary requirements.
