Are you passionate about history and sharing it with visitors from all over the country and world? The Moss Mansion takes volunteers on a rolling basis to help maintain the history and structure of the 1903 home while also sharing it with others. The Moss Mansion is a historic house museum in Billings, Montana. The landmark pioneer mansion features original furnishings and fixtures throughout and is preserved in its nearly original form. We offer both guided and self guided tours to visitors throughout the year, sharing information with them as they visit the home and gain new insight into Billings history. We rely on volunteers to act as both hosts and docents to assist guests during their time in the mansion. Hosts are stationed on the main levels of the house, and they are there to answer period questions and offer information to guests on a self-guided tour. Docents act as tour guides during guided tours, working from a pre-existing script provided by the museum. They are also expected to perform host duties during their shift in between guided tour times and on days where we don't offer/sell any guided tours. Many volunteers take on both Host and Docent duties, but can focus on Hosting if more comfortable in that position. The schedule is set a month in advance (following a training period). We typically ask tour volunteers to work one shift per week, but we can offer more or less depending on your availability. Shifts occur 11:30AM-4PM every day except Tuesdays (when we are closed) during our regular season. Summer shifts are 9:30AM-1PM and 12:30PM-4:00PM Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and 11:30-4PM Sundays.

Description
In 1903, entrepreneur Preston Boyd Moss (better known as "P.B.") built the Moss Mansion, greatly influencing the culture of Billings, Montana.
Designed by New York architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, designer of the original Waldorf Astoria and Plaza Hotels, the mansion showcases inspired architecture, unrivaled craftsmanship and exquisite décor. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has graced the silver screen on several occasions as the perfect site for period films such as Son of the Morning Star and Return to Lonesome Dove.
Although the youngest daughter, Melville Moss, resided in the home until the mid-80’s, the house and its original fixtures remain intact. Modern day visitors marvel at the home’s amenities which include a call button system for the servants, among other impressive feats of technology for the period. The home not only records the activities of early Billings development but also interprets the inner workings of the family through letters shared among its members.
