Enrichment Facilitator

Overview:

Agate Housing and Services serves people experiencing homelessness, with the mission to end homelessness and relieve hunger. We provide a variety of services, including emergency shelters like our Couple’s Shelter at the First Covenant Church. Our shelter provides survival essentials like food, supplies , and a bed for 24 pairs of people . But there’s so much more to life than this, and we want to give shelter guests the enrichment they deserve. Enrichment can come in many forms, but the shelter guests have always enjoyed bingo. Agate has all the supplies for it but doesn’t always have the time or staff to do it.

Agate is seeking a volunteer who can host an arts and crafts night, teach people how to knit/crochet, play games, or potentially provide live music. They could also bring a game console with multiple controllers so people could play video games together. We are open to discussing new activities as long as they are inclusive and appropriate. Th e Enrichment Facilitator is special because they go beyond the basic needs, bringing a smile to peoples’ faces and offering an outlet for fun, learning, and joy (see note about expectations below).

Support and Supervision:

The Enrichment Facilitator ’s on-site supervisor is Lisa Kaste, Program Manager of Shelter . They will b e the volunteer’s main point of contact , trainer, and guide . Lisa may not always be at the shelter when the Facilitator is, but it is also supervised by other Agates staff 24/7. They can ask for help and guidance from them as well.

They will be informed about the agency, its programs, the shelter, and the people we serve by the Volunteer Manager, Noah Chan .

Impact:

The Enrichment Facilitator helps brighten people's days and improve the overall wellbeing of Agate's Couple Shelter residents . Offering enriching activities fosters a sense of shared community and provides opportunities for self-expression. Games and bingo are good ways to de-stress and have some fun. Performing arts and entertainment can improve residents’ wellbeing and give them space to feel joy and relaxation. Overall, the Enrichment Facilitator brings value to the residents by offering a fun, entertaining, and engaging experience.

Expectations:

It’s important to note that the Couples’ Shelter is 24 hours, and guests are free to come and go as they please (within curfew for safety). It’s challenging to predict how many people will show up to an activity . Sometimes, shelter guests need to see that an activity happens each week before joining in. All of this to say, it’s important to come into this experience with no expectations about how many people may attend or interact with you. Please keep these factors in mind when expressing interest about this volunteer role.
