Project Specifics:
See why West Virginia is Wild and Wonderful!
Help support this dynamic National Wilderness Area!
The 47,815-acre Cranberry Wilderness in the Monongahela National Forest is in Pocahontas and Webster Counties, West Virginia located between Morgantown, WV and Roanoke, VA.
In keeping with the Wilderness ideals, volunteers will use hand tools such as loppers, garden shears, handsaws and crosscut saws (with certified personnel) remove downed limbs, trees and overgrown vegetation. This wilderness is truly one of the most wild and wonderful places in West Virginia and cleaning up some of the trail obstructions will really enhance the trail user’s experience.
Hiking/Access
Volunteers will drive about 8 miles on paved roads from the housing to the trailhead, and then hike about 2 miles to the project worksite with about 200 feet of elevation change.
Area and Attractions
Cranberry Wilderness borders the Highland Scenic Highway with multiple overlooks, access to scenic trails and the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center at the Southern entrance. Heading west from the Nature Center you can visit the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, the largest bog area in West Virginia. This acidic wetland allows viewing of plants that are typically found in more northern areas like Canada. Fishing opportunities are abundant in the surrounding area and are stocked periodically by the West Virginia Division on Natural Resources. The small town of Marlinton, WV is close by and has multiple cafes and restaurants for an afternoon coffee or dinner.
Accommodations Description
Volunteers will camp at Tea Creek Campground, a spacious 28-site campground, a recreational hub of the area. Four trailheads are located within the campground and walking distance to most of the Tea Creek Trail System. Each camping site is equipped with a parking spur, picnic table, fire ring with a grill, waste receptacle and a lantern hookup. The campground has vault toilets, and water accessible at the campground entrance. Volunteers need to bring their own tent and personal camping gear; sheets, bedding or sleeping bag; towels, and personal cup, bowl, mug, and eating utensils.
