What is SHICK?
SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansans) is a free, unbiased, and confidential program powered by dedicated, trained community volunteers. Our mission is to empower Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers with the knowledge and support they need to make informed health care decisions. Our volunteers don't work for insurance companies-they work for the people of Kansas.

Why SHICK Needs YOU!

As a SHICK volunteer, you’ll provide a vital service by helping individuals navigate the often-confusing world of Medicare and health insurance. If you’re compassionate, driven, and ready to make a difference, we want you on our team!

Ideal SHICK Volunteers Have:
  • A passion for helping others.
  • Confidence and a caring attitude.
  • The ability to understand and explain health care information.
  • A willingness to stay informed about changes in health care regulations.
  • Basic computer and internet skills.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • A commitment to giving their time to the program.
Volunteer Roles That Fit Your Strengths:
  • Comprehensive Medicare Counselor: Guide individuals through Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, and other insurance options like Long-Term Care and Medicare Savings Plans.
  • Medicare Part C/D Counselor: Specialize in Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) and prescription drug plans (Part D).
  • Call Center Volunteer: Help callers statewide by answering questions and connecting them to local SHICK offices.
  • Office Assistant: Support the program with administrative tasks like data entry and clerical duties.
Training and Support:

No prior experience? No problem! We provide thorough training on all things Medicare, including Parts A, B, C, and D, prescription drug insurance, and supplemental insurance options. Training is available both online and in person.

Volunteers complete an application, interview, and background check before training begins. Once onboard, you’ll receive the tools and knowledge you need to excel as a SHICK volunteer.

Join us today and be part of something bigger!
By volunteering with SHICK, you’re not just helping individuals-you’re strengthening the community. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need for a healthier, more secure future.
