The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Central Oregon Field Office is seeking a camp host to join our team and help care for Priest Hole and nearby recreation sites in sunny Central Oregon! Priest Hole is a very remote and seasonally popular recreation area along the John Day Wild and Scenic River most known for its world-class bass fishing, breathtaking scenery, and incredible boating opportunities. The BLM is constructing a brand-new campground on site that will be open just in time for the spring peak use season! Come be Priest Hole’s very first camp host!
This position works on site mid-May through mid-September. Dates and time commitments can be flexible, with the priorities being weekends from Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in June.
Duties: Host volunteers answer visitor questions, encourage visitor rule adherence, and maintain the recreation area. Once per week the host(s) will visit Burnt Ranch and Twickenham sites that are about a 20 to 25 minute drive from Priest Hole. The selected volunteer must have strong interpersonal and customer service skills, as visitor interactions occur daily at the campsites and boat launches. Volunteers must be comfortable in a remote location, an hour and a half from the nearest grocery store. Volunteers are also required to perform maintenance duties including, but not limited to, cleaning primitive restrooms, litter collection, and fire ring cleanup. Based on these physical duties, volunteers must be able and willing to walk several miles per day and lift up to 15 pounds. Site-based training is provided by BLM staff upon entry on duty.
Amenities: One RV site with an electrical hook-up is provided for lodging. Amenities are extremely limited at Priest Hole; there is no cell service, water, or sewer hook-ups. There is no public garbage service.
