The Development Associate will work with guidance from the Development Director to complete tasks that aid Veterans Yoga Project raise the funds it needs to continue programs and operations. You may be asked to contact potential donors, support the maintenance of relationships with existing donors, or assist with organizing fundraising events (virtual and real world). Anticipate researching potential sources of revenue from federal to philanthropic grants, individuals, fee for service, merchandising and corporate sponsorships. From supporting grant proposals and report writing efforts to supporting event planning, your day will be varied and may include activities to organize and maintain records, analyze donor data and more.
Working within our virtual team environment, you will be expected to embrace technology and bring fundamental computer skills to your position. Previous experience working with teams across departments, in customer service, marketing, promotions or administrative support functions in addition to experience in or with a nonprofit would be beneficial in this role. The ideal candidate will have worked in a nonprofit fundraising setting for 1-2 years and have a basic understanding of fundraising best practices.

Position DescriptionThe Development Associate is responsible for assisting in and supporting fundraising operations within Veterans Yoga Project which include general operating and program funding efforts, event management and donor identification and stewardship. They will also participate in the full range of activities required to seek, acquire and manage grants from foundations, corporations, other nonprofit organizations, civic groups and governmental entities. The Development Associate will report to the Development Director and work with a team of VYP colleagues, both paid and volunteer.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDraft grant proposals and reports within deadlines. May include:
Gathering information independently and with assistance of VYP colleagues from outside sources and from internal sources
Working with program outcomes tracking and evaluation data
Attending team meetings related to specific grants
Interact with VYP colleagues, volunteers and stakeholders to ensure effective coordination of development-related or connected programs, projects and activities. May include:
Providing support to various teams and volunteers during fundraising campaigns and events, online and real world, which may include logistics and vendor relationship management
Under supervision, research, write, edit, or oversee the preparation of persuasive, accurate, grammatically and syntactically correct solicitations, proposals, case statements, reports, correspondence, and other development-related communication materials as required
Under supervision, identify potential new major donors (individual or institutional) and cultivate strong relationships
Under supervision, steward existing donor relationships through regular communication as defined by the development annual work plan. May include:
Working with volunteers and other team members to track or complete mailing (or emailing) of routinized correspondence to donors, potential donors, volunteers and others as necessary
Making follow up calls to donors
Under supervision, develop new relationships with lapsed donors through outreach as defined by development annual work plan
Manage a database of lapsed, current and potential donors and work with volunteers who input data. May include:
Maintaining the accuracy and integrity of databases by ensuring that all information is kept current and up to date
Segmenting donors according to predetermined criteria
Preparing lists for email merges, mail merges, and call banks
Perform other duties as needs develop

Understands or is willing to learn more about the vision, mission, purpose and programming of VYP
Displays exceptional time-management and organizational skills as needed for meeting deadlines
Shows persuasiveness and the ability to procure donors, funders and items needed for fundraising efforts
Demonstrates a professional demeanor whether speaking to others in person, over the phone, via email, text or through letters
Displays effective interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to work well alone and collaboratively, with and without direct supervision
Displays a command of the English language in written and verbal communications
Has some working knowledge of the philanthropic and business communities
Possesses knowledge and experience with Microsoft suite of Office products (especially Word, PPT, Excel)
Possesses knowledge and experience working with project management applications (preferred)
Possesses experience with CRM and/or fundraising applications (preferred)
Has experience working with volunteers to achieve specific outcomes (preferred)
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, finance, communications, data analytics, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred. Three to five years of position-specific experience may be substituted.
One to two years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising or business development.
On-the-job training and professional development will be provided.

Veterans Yoga Project is a national 501(c)3 on a mission to support recovery and resilience among our veterans, military families and communities. VYP envisions a future where all those affected by trauma have access to a full range of mind-body practices and programs, and is committed to providing these tools and training in Safer, Predictable and Controlled environments (SPaCe).
Founded in 2011, Veterans Yoga Project is an IAYT member school, an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider and a certified Yoga Alliance School ( RYS-200 YACEP). Working in partnership with veterans, active-duty military personnel, student veterans' organizations , veterans treatment courts and other non-profit organizations, VYP-trained instructors and clinicians provide programs, resources, connections and teach over 100 free yoga classes each week.
