About South Asian Women Project

Location:

8909 31st Avenue, East Elmhurst, NY 11369, US

Mission Statement

The South Asian Women Project offers survivors of intimate partner violence and their families from the Bengali community, a safe place to recover from trauma through culturally sensitive support groups, trauma-informed counseling, and financial empowerment.

Description

South Asian Women Project primarily serve South Asian immigrant women and children, specifically from the Bangladeshi community who are either victimized by gender based violence or at risk, and living in the USA, through culturally sensitive support groups, trauma-informed counseling, and financial empowerment.

Our goal is to create a space for women and their children who have suffered IPV where they can feel safe and comfortable to talk about their traumatic experiences and support one another, while investing in themselves and laying the groundwork for financial independence. Along with building a supportive community, SAWP offers skill based resources, education, empowerment support to the survivors to be self-sufficient. We mostly work with low-income immigrant women who often are unable to access culturally relevant and linguistically accessible support from mainstream organizations. More than half of the people we serve are low-income, Bengali-speaking, Our programs are free and open to all IPV survivors. Geographically, we are focused on Bangladeshi enclaves in New York City.
