The Heather Meadows Visitor Center was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1940’s as a ski warming hut and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The rustic off-grid building has a warm wood interior with an open floor plan and a rock fireplace (only heat source). There is no running water at the visitor center and vault toilets are located outdoors across the parking lot from the building.
The center is operated by the US Forest Service along with the agency’s cooperating partner, North Cascades Institute (NCI) who runs a retail outlet during the operating season. NCI staff include one employee during each shift. The outlet sells books, maps, interpretive items and federal recreation passes.
The Heather Meadows area is a National Forest recreation fee site and visitors are required have a valid federal recreation pass posted in their vehicle while in the area. Multiple trails suitable for a variety of abilities, a picnic area, a ski area, and many scenic vistas are located in the Heather Meadows Area near the Visitor Center
The Heather Meadows Visitor Center is open during the summer months once the Mt. Baker Highway is plowed by the Washington State Department of Transportation and vehicular access is gained into the area (typically early July). The Heather Meadows area is one of the most heavily visited sites of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Visitation varies depending on weather and you may see over 300 visitors to the center on a sunny day.
Operating hours at the Heather Meadows Visitor Center are from 10 am to 4 pm.
Volunteer will be signed up under US Forest Service Individual Volunteer Agreements (OF-301a). All volunteers are asked to record their hours serving as Heather Meadows Visitor center hosts.
Housing is provided for volunteers in a rustic A-Frame located 1-mile from the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center and A-Frame housing are in a remote location. The closest services are 45 minutes away in Glacier. The nearest large city with full services is 90 minutes away in Bellingham. Due to limited Forest Service staff this summer, there will be days when volunteers will need to be able to operate autonomously in accordance with provided training.
