To volunteer your therapeutic services with PBC, you must be currently licensed in the state of Maryland and have active liability insurance. All volunteers are also required to participate in a background check.
Pro Bono Counseling’s volunteer clinicians are the lifeblood of the organization and the driving force behind its efforts. We would like to sincerely thank the more than two thousand mental health professionals who have given their time since our inception in 1991. It is through their exceptional generosity that PBC can continue to help Marylanders with limited resources receive quality mental health care.
When you enroll as a volunteer with Pro Bono Counseling (PBC), you are part of a movement to improve access to mental health care in Maryland. Our network of over 900 participating clinicians donates over 16,000 hours of their time each year to improve the lives of Marylanders in need of counseling.
Enrolling as a volunteer clinician with Pro Bono Counseling also offers benefits to you, including:
Thoroughly screened clients - PBC takes care to ensure that all new clients are thoroughly screened by a licensed social worker during the intake process, and we only match clients who can engage in insight-oriented counseling.
Free continuing education workshops - Pro Bono Counseling is approved by the APA to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PBC is also an approved CE sponsor for the MD Boards of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors and Therapists.
Case consultation - PBC’s Clinical Director, an LCSW-C with over 20 years of experience, is available for case consultation.

Description
Pro Bono Counseling (PBC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1991 to ensure that Marylanders with limited resources requesting mental health care are provided access to volunteer licensed mental health professionals and other necessary supportive services. Since then, PBC has helped match thousands of individuals and families throughout Maryland with the most appropriate counselors, based on their specific needs, and helped them obtain the mental health care they could not otherwise afford.
PBC’s vision is the availability of quality mental health care for all those in need. The organization serves anyone in Maryland who is facing difficulties paying for counseling - including individuals of all ages, as well as couples, and families- through connections to volunteer mental health therapists for free counseling to address mental health concerns, including stress, anxiety, sadness, grief, life transitions, relationship issues, or any other issue that can be addressed through therapy. PBC has a network of more than 900 volunteer licensed mental health counselors, covering a range of specialties, located all throughout Maryland. Counseling services are offered in person, and via video conferencing and telephone.
