Eastern Hemlocks are an important part of forest ecosystems on the East Coast and are threatened by invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. Without these trees, ecosystems will be negatively affected by a decrease in habitat, carbon sequestration, and groundwater filtering as well as increase in soil erosion.

Volunteer helps support the Tracking Eastern Hemlock project with Adventure Scientists. Volunteers will adventure through hiking, backpacking, exploring while recording observation of lingering Eastern Hemlock trees who are resistant to the invasive hemlock wooly adelgid.

The volunteer will directly contribute to conservation, by contributing to large-scale data collection through citizen/community science. Data will be used to breed individual hemlock trees that have genetic resistance to hemlock woolly adelgid.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Record observations across National Forests in New York, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky

  • Manage own safety and trip planning for your volunteer adventure

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Complete online training and check equipment kit upon mailing

  • Participate in Adventure Scientists’ events as desired

Desired Experience:

  • No prior experience required

  • Strong sense of adventure and willingness to learn and adapt

Training: Training, and all gear necessary to successfully complete data collection will be provided. After signing up for the project, volunteers will be guided through a short online training to learn how to collect data, location scout, and submit their observations.

Mission Statement

Adventure Scientists is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We ensure the availability of critical field data that accelerates conservation and climate solutions. We achieve our mission by mobilizing and training outdoor enthusiasts and local communities to collect high-quality scientific data that are difficult to access, require too large a scale, or are too costly to obtain with traditional methods.

Description

Goals
1. Be the most efficient provider of hard-to-obtain environmental data that would otherwise be unavailable for conservation.
2. Grow a network of informed volunteers who have a deep commitment to conservation after participating in the scientific process.
3. Serve as an invaluable connection between the conservation and outdoor communities.
