We are looking for volunteers to help assist non-English speaking visitors who are interested in adopting a shelter pet or learning more about our services.

Activities
Assist in verbal translations of Spanish/English, or Chinese/English
Time and Location
As-needed basis, e.g. for specific events
Dates of events are determined a few weeks before each event - we will contact you via email to sign up for a specific event
Events may be on-site at Oakland Animal Services, or at other off-site locations
Shifts are typically between 2 to 5 hours long
Requirements
Ability to translate conversational Spanish into English (and vice versa); or ability to translate conversational Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) into English (and vice versa)
Friendly and welcoming towards all visitors
Training
No training is provided for this role; volunteers must already possess the required language skills
Impact
Translation volunteers make a significant impact by assisting non-English speaking visitors with adopting a pet or with learning more about shelter services.

Our staff provides critical services to our community, sheltering thousands of Oakland’s stray animals each year and responding to animal-related calls for service in Oakland. We are a city agency that proudly provides public safety and animal welfare services as well as human health and social services. We are here to serve our community’s residents, and promote responsible pet ownership and humane care.
Description
As Oakland’s only open admissions shelter, Oakland Animal Services accepts all of Oakland’s homeless, injured, orphaned, unwanted, lost, abandoned and mistreated animals, regardless of age, breed, temperament or medical condition.
With the assistance of a dedicated group of volunteers and the support of nonprofit Friends of Oakland Animal Services, OAS saves the lives of more than 5,000 companion animals each year.
OAS is excited to be a part of the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) coalition whose primary goal is to keep people and pets together.
