Our mission is to improve the lives of students affected by food insecurity in Baltimore by delivering bags of nutritious and child-friendly food to schools weekly.

Our bags are primarily driven to schools by volunteer drivers who come to the facility in Timonium on Thursday morning to pick up bags for their assigned school. Our staff and volunteers will assist in loading the bags into the car and provide directions and contact information for the school. Schools receive anywhere from 10 - 80 bags of food each week so please specify what size car you have before signing up. When empty, most sedans can take up to 40 bags and most SUVs 50 and above. We ask each school to be ready for the delivery and to help with unloading, but this isn’t always possible, and you might be asked to unload the bags. Please take this into consideration in terms of time and your ability to lift the bags, which average 10 lbs each. The time commitment is usually an hour and a half between loading and delivering bags.

We are currently looking for both regular drivers, who can aim to go to the same school every week, and substitutes, who can sign up for schools as needed each week. If you're interested in either opportunity, please email alexandra@weekendbackpacks.org or sign up to get started.

Mission Statement

The mission of Weekend Backpacks is to improve the lives of students affected by food insecurity in Baltimore. We envision that all students are nourished and ready to learn.

Description

All Baltimore City schoolchildren are provided a free breakfast and lunch on school days. However, those experiencing food insecurity face the weekend without that same reliable access to food. Weekend Backpacks aims to bridge this gap by providing nutritious, child-friendly food to students and their families for the weekends.
