Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteers are stationed at Earl Landing and Campground on the Namekagon River and work to increase public awareness and understanding of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and its significance, serving as a live‐in host at Earl Landing and Campground. The people selected for this volunteer position can either be a single individual or a couple.

The primary responsibility of a Landing Host is to assist users by greeting and orienting canoeists, boaters, kayakers, inner tubers and campers, answering questions, assisting with the flow of traffic for dropping off equipment, and sharing safety information and rules in a cheerful and helpful manner.

DUTIES

Through training, volunteers will become familiar with National Park Service and St. Croix National Scenic Riverway rules as well as learning area information and fishing and boating regulations. The host helps record visitor use counts throughout the season. Volunteers also perform light maintenance work around the area such as litter pickup, stocking of supplies, and various other duties. The host monitors campground use and reports issues or problems to their direct supervisor, maintenance or law enforcement staff as needed. On busy weekends the host may assist park staff in directing traffic or working an information table at the landing.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience, skill, and patience in speaking with the public and park visitors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway was one of the first eight waterways protected by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968. Today the National Park Service protects and enhances 233 miles of this long, linear park. It includes 133.5 miles of the St. Croix River and the entire 99.5 miles of the Namekagon River. Earl Park Landing and Campground is located on the Namekagon River, approximately 15 miles southwest of Hayward, Wisconsin. It is a very busy day use access to the river for inner tube, kayak, and canoe recreation, adjacent to a campground with 10 campsites which is heavily used by groups and families on weekends.

LODGING

A level parking pad with full hook‐ups are provided for use by volunteer selected for this position. A trailer, camper or RV are highly recommended for the selected volunteer.
