The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin is hosting a week-long camp brought to us by the iCan Shine’s Bike program.
The goal of the program is to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become a lifelong independent rider!
This year's location will once again be at Forest Park Middle School in the Franklin School District. The dates of the camp are: July 28-August 1, 2024.
Volunteer orientation for the camp will be on Sunday, July 27 at Forest Park Middle School from 4-5 p.m. Attendance at the orientation is highly encouraged.
Ideally, each volunteer will be scheduled for a 90-minute session with their assigned rider, each of the five days of camp plus a 15 minute daily briefing before camp begins. If you cannot volunteer for all five days of the camp or at the same session all five days, please still consider volunteering. We will work with you and your schedule so that you can experience this awesome volunteer opportunity!
iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and trained staff members to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend their scheduled 75-minute session at the same time each day for five consecutive days (M - F). All participants are physically assisted and encouraged by two volunteer "spotters" throughout the duration of the one-week camp.
As the camp progresses, the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week concludes with a touching and inspiring award ceremony!
iCan Bike riders are children ages eight (8) and up, teens and sometimes adults who have a diagnosed disability but are able to walk without assistive devices and sidestep from side to side. Volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt so that they are clearly visible.
Volunteer Requirements for Bike Helpers:
- Must be at least 15 years old (unless accompanied by an adult)
- We prefer that you are able to attend for 90 minutes at the same time each day of the five days of camp. There will also be 15 minutes of training at the beginning of the session, and 15 minutes of debriefing at the end of the session. If you cannot attend the camp all five days, please still register to volunteer and we will work out a schedule with you.
- Must be able to provide physical, emotional and motivational support to the assigned rider.
- Must be able and willing to do exercise for a great cause. Expect light jogging/brisk walking the first day that will progress to active running as the riders gain confidence. *
*If these requirements are too strenuous, we have other volunteer opportunities for this event including our check in table and general event support.
