Join the New Worlds Reading Events in Northwest Florida!

Are you passionate about literacy and eager to make a meaningful impact in your community? We seek dedicated volunteers to join our New Worlds Reading events in the Northwest area of Florida. These events, hosted by the Florida State Alliance of YMCAs in partnership with the UF Lastinger Center New Worlds Reading Initiative, play a crucial role in fostering a love of reading among children and enhancing family engagement in literacy. As a volunteer, you will directly impact the lives of children and families, providing them with resources to enroll them in the New Worlds Reading Initiative and playing a key role in supporting communities.

About the New Worlds Reading Initiative:

The New Worlds Reading Initiative is a transformative statewide program committed to improving literacy skills among children across Florida. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of reading through engaging activities, resources, and support. Our events serve as a platform to unite families, celebrate books, and create a supportive community for young readers.

Volunteer Responsibilities may Include:

  • Event Sign-In: Welcome and assist families with signing in upon arrival, ensuring a smooth and organized registration process.

  • Program Enrollment: Help parents enroll their children in the New Worlds Reading program, providing them with all necessary information and materials.

  • Event Setup and Cleanup: Help set up before and after the event to ensure a welcoming and tidy environment.

  • Children's Activities: Assist or lead various engaging activities to promote reading and

creativity among students.

Event Details:

  • Location: Various counties across Northwest Florida, including Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Monroe, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla.

  • Attendance: Events typically host 15 to 200 attendees, offering a vibrant and diverse community atmosphere.

  • Travel: Volunteers are responsible for travel arrangements to and from the events. *There may be times where transportation can be provided to and from the event by the State Manager*

What We Are Looking For:

  • We seek enthusiastic individuals passionate about running events and working with families.

  • Volunteers must have their own transportation and travel arrangements to and from the events.

  • Volunteers must be able to pass a Level 2 Background screening.

YMCA Reads! is a literacy and mentoring program targeting students Kindergarten through Fourth grade. We are looking for volunteers to make a positive impact in the lives of children! No experience is needed- -training is provided! By volunteering just 2-4 hours a week, you can teach a child to read.

Description

As a YMCA Reads! mentor, you work with a small group of K-4th grade students, under the supervision of the Site Coordinator. By becoming a YMCA Reads! mentor, you will be able to:
* Help children develop positive self esteem
* Provide structured reading intervention instruction
* Promote literacy and increased academic performance
