ORGANIZATION: MGSD DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION FAMILIA

image_20250106103636

We aim to provide all written information in both English and Spanish, but currently do not have any board members or major volunteers who speak Spanish fluently. To minimize pressure placed on Spanish speaking teachers or our district translator, we are seeking assistance with occasional translations. Our "About" page on our website is a good example of the kind of content we want to get translated (what is there now needs to be reviewed, as we used google translate).

We would like to be able to share a google doc with the volunteer with the text that needs to be translated. This could vary from text for a flyer or graphic, text for a facebook post, or content like that on our About Page. We will still ask our District Translator to review and edit translations for larger texts, so this is a great opportunity for a high school or college student or anyone else who is confidently bilingual.

Preferences:

  • Spanish as first language
  • Fluent English
  • 48 hour turnaround time for smaller translations or good communication to help manage expectations
  • Collaborative discussion if the explanations we are writing in English may not make sense once translated (ie. "Spirit Night" is a common challenge for groups like ours)

About MGSD DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION FAMILIA

Mission Statement

Our goals are to: --Build community among Dual Immersion families across the district. --Coordinate volunteer opportunities. --Supplement teacher spending on books and supplies for the classroom or special events.

Description

We are a brand new parent support group specifically for the Dual Language Immersion (aka DI) program at all elementary and intermediate schools in the Mooresville Graded School District. Our 550 or so students are taught in Spanish and English, spending 2.5 days a week learning in each language. While most of our families speak English as the primary or exclusive language at home, some of our families do speak Spanish as their first language. While our kids largely follow the same curriculum as their peers, this experience presents some unique opportunities and challenges that our group seeks to meet!
