ORGANIZATION: Friends of Princeton Open Space
Please visit the new page to apply.
- A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
Volunteers will work under the guidance of the Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) stewardship staff to perform ecological restoration work and invasive species removal in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.
Help battle invasive plant outbreaks at the Preserve and work to free large established trees from the grip of invasive vines. Participants will gain skills in plant identification and learn about some of the pressures New Jersey's forests face.
What to Wear: We recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and work boots/sneakers--this will best protect you from thorns, ticks, mud, and poison ivy.
Waiver: Please complete our online waiver prior to the event: fopos.org/waiver
Meeting Location: Mountain Lakes House Parking lot, 57 Mountain Ave, Princeton NJ, 08540. Be sure to drive down the long paved driveway entrance to the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, marked by a series of black mail boxes. The gravel parking lot is on your left about a 1/2 mile down the driveway.
Looking to volunteer as a group? Families, students, community / corporate groups, please email info@fopos.org with "VOLUNTEER" in the subject line if you would like to volunteer as a group.

Mission Statement
Founded in 1969, we are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to the following:
In Princeton: Acquiring open space for preservation, protecting natural resources, maintaining and extending trails and providing environmental education.
In the Princeton Region: Working with other groups to support efforts to preserve and protect open space and the environment.
Description
Friends of Princeton Open Space is a non-profit organization that has helped establish over 1,000 acres of parkland and a network of interconnecting trails that nearly circles Princeton. Through the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS helped to raise $4.5 million for the purchase of land and acquisition of easements on properties that might have been bulldozed for development. In addition to property acquisition, FOPOS also leads in land stewardship, from creating and maintaining hiking trails, including boardwalks and footbridges, to the removal of invasive species and the replanting of native varieties. FOPOS sponsors nature walks and plant workshops that are free and open to the public.
