Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2025

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. (commonly known as "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day") is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, a national leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th century who continues to inspire the pursuit of civil rights today. It is commemorated nationally as a Day of Service and many parks traditionally host volunteer projects. It is also a day when entrance fees are waived at parks.

MLK Day of Service is a defining moment in volunteerism, as Americans across the country step up to make communities more equitable and take action to build the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed this community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

Join park staff and partners for a safe and educational session on Saturday, January 18 from 10am to 1pm and help restore native vegetation along the hillsides of Potrero Creek at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa. Work will consist of planting hundreds of live plants grown from locally collected seed. Volunteers will have the opportunity to join a ranger-led interpretive walk to explain the signficance of everyone's work and prepare seed bombs to improve wildlife habitats and help establish resilient, healthy ecosystems.

All are welcome, no experience required! All attendees are asked to bring water, sunscreen, and sun-protective layers. Hiking attire, closed-toed shoes, and long pants and shirts are strongly recommended. Gloves and tools will be provided.
