Maintenance Volunteer (RV Volunteer) Valentine National Wildlife Refuge

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location and Area Information: The 72,000 acre Valentine National Wildlife Refuge lies in the heart of the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills, a vast area of grass blanketed sand dunes, which flow across north-central Nebraska. Lakes and marshes in the valleys and prairie grasses in the hills and meadows provide habitat for many kinds of wildlife. Pristine lakes, vast expanses of native prairie, and abundant fish and wildlife provide great opportunities to bird watch, hike, hunt, and fish. You can experience the vastness of the prairie from the observation deck located on the old fire tower at the west end of Hackberry Lake.

The Refuge office is located 30 miles south of the town of Valentine, which has a variety of shops, restaurants, and grocery stores. The RV pad is located within the Sub-HQ area on the shores of beautiful Hackberry Lake, which is 16 miles from the Refuge Office. Cell coverage is limited, AT&T, US Cellular and Verizon Wireless work.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location:

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
