Seeds in the Middle is super-fortunate to have received a grant from the Brookllyn Communities Collaborative to help decrease the tragically high rates of maternal and infant mortality among Black and Brown women.
We have proposed a series of activities and are seeking partners either with great interest or expertise in helping us in preventive, healthy, joyful programs that we believe and hope can boost health outcomes for all.
Please write to us with your background and interest. Students and graduate students - love to have you as part of your goals to achieve success and betterment in this space.
We will be offering:
- healthy cooking classes for Mommy, Daddy and all loving adults and baby
- prenatal yoga
- Open play space for baby and toddlers - with nurturing cafe for caregivers
- Fresh Market with free coupons for expecting and new moms and famillies
- Mommy and Me classes, with music and movement, etc.
- Free baby showers offering needed supplies, like diapers, gently used baby clothes and needs, etc. (feel free to host one plus a free baby store)
- Free consults with doulas/midwives and those specialists dedicated to nurturing care of parents and babies
- Other suggestions...
Locations:
Crown Heights: Seeds in the Middle Community Action Spot, 318 Rogers Ave., Brooklyn, NY (at the corner of Montgomery Ave.) - we will be converting this open space where we also run a fresh market and refrigerate perishable fruits and veggies and do healthy cooking - to an open play space/cafe as a warm, welcoming place for all ages (seniors too)
Brownsville: Place TBD but most likely Charity Baptist Church, 142 Watkins Street, Brooklyn
- volunteer to run the play space at various times, especially mornings
- for Brownsville - we want to do Saturdays
We are interested in everyone who wants to truly make a difference and especially show kindness, gentleness, love to all, particularly our vulnerable moms and families.
Please write to us at info@seedsinthemiddle.org
Tell us your background and why you want to join us. Especially tell us days and times you are available and if you can dedicate 8 weeks straight of a particular day/time so we can count on you.

About Seeds in the Middle
Location:
153 Warren Street, BROOKLYN, NY 11201, US
Mission Statement
Seeds in the Middle partners with students, educators, parents & their communities to access all opportunities, beginning with improving health, enhancing arts education and greening their environment. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale educational and social disparities. Our pilot schools are in central Brooklyn, a neighborhood with among the city’s highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates. We teach how to grow, market, cook, access and prepare fresh food, how to exercise & engage in the arts, all the elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.
Description
Seeds in the Middle offers joyful, healthy interventions that nurture the whole child and address the multiple obstacles blocking low-income children and families from getting healthy. We teach how to grow edible gardens, run a student-led Hip2B Healthy Market, bring chefs into schools, started soccer, running and fitness programs at school and in the community and music and arts in the schools. We integrate professional development for teachers so that a healthy lifestyle and environmental stewardship becomes organic and sustainable in the school community. To build community, we created Soccer for Harmony tournaments and the Crown Heights Farmers Market. In two years, we have engaged more than 1,000 families, and students and teachers report changing their habits to include more fruits and vegetables, and fitness. This is a pilot for any school and Seeds in the Middle plans to replicate.
