VRRP, a project of the Huntington Congretational Church, is anticipating the arrival of a second refugee family early in 2025. VRRP successfully helped resettle a family in 2023 and many of the volunteers are continuing to work with a new family. Volunteers are critical to assist the family learn and complete the requirements for housing, education and employment, and also accessing public assistance available to them.
Volunteer opportunities include driving which may include going to initial medical exams, education or benefits appointments, helping the adults obtain driver's licenses, etc. Volunteers help set up the family's new apartment (furnishings have been donated and are in storage). Volunteers help the family learn to navigate the online systems for banking, bill paying, benefits, etc., how to use public transportation, and practicing English. No matter your skills, they are invaluable to newcomers.
We will not know the family's residence until after learning their arrival date to secure an apartment lease. The family will reside in the Lower Naugatuck Valley.

Description
HCC established a new program in 2021, the Valley Refugee Resettlement Project (VRRP), and recruited volunteers to work through IRIS, the Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services. VRRP, which resettled a Syrian family in 2023, is awaiting our second family from Afghanistan. Volunteers are a critical component of the intense and time consuming resettlement process as we guide the family through all of the requirements for housing, education and employment toward becoming self sufficient and contributing community members. We are seeking caring, concerned, and passionate people to help as volunteers in this process.
