As a Volunteer Education Specialist, you will assist rangers and fellow volunteers in planning and implementing youth educational programs on White House history and its legacies. Your role will involve helping students comprehend study materials (including pre-visit and post-visit information) and ensuring a safe, engaging, and positive learning environment during their on-site visits to The White House and the White House Visitor Center.
The ideal candidate is flexible, possesses excellent organizational and public speaking skills, and demonstrates the ability to work effectively with students of diverse ages and abilities. The role requires adaptability, as you may encounter changing situations that call for creative problem-solving on short notice. This is a nonpartisan position that focuses on the significance of The White House within the National Park system and the overarching history of the United States.
The Volunteer Education Specialist should have a passion for education and history, strong communication skills, and a solid understanding of learning tools and technologies. Knowledge of various teaching methodologies is a plus.
Qualifications
- Strong interest in learning and understanding basic teaching and learning methods.
- Excellent communication skills to clearly explain complex concepts to students and collaborate effectively with rangers and the education volunteer team.
- Patience and empathy to assist students of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Exceptional organizational skills to manage materials and resources for pre-visits, park visits, and post-visits.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges in both indoor and outdoor learning environments and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to assess student performance and provide constructive feedback to the education team after each program.
- Physical endurance to manage active learning environments, including standing for long periods, assisting with physical activities, and setting up programs.
- Proficiency with video platforms such as Teams, Zoom, and classroom technology to conduct virtual pre-visits.
- Capacity to implement and present lesson plans effectively.
- Friendly, enthusiastic, and approachable demeanor.
- Ability to pass a federal background check.
