Mystic Valley Elder Services is seeking volunteer coaches for our Healthy Aging Program to lead "A Matter of Balance" workshops.
Many older adults are at risk of falling. A Matter of Balance , a workshop offered through the Healthy Aging Program at Mystic Valley Services, is specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable and improve activity levels. Participants learn about the importance of exercise in preventing falls and practice exercises to improve strength, coordination and balance.
Workshops are facilitated by 2 trained volunteer "coaches" and are interactive.
Participants engage in group discussion, problem-solving, role-play activities, assertiveness training, and exercise. Each participant receives a manual to use during the workshop, which contains the class activities and homework.
The program teaches participants to:
- View falls as controllable
- Set realistic goals for increasing activity
- Make small changes to reduce fall risks at home
- Exercise to increase strength and balance
Classes are held once a week for 8 consecutive weeks (2 hours per class).
