The Stephen T. Pearlman Volunteer Center administers the volunteer recruitment, screening and interviewing, orientation, training and education, placement and referral, retention, and recognition processes for Lighthouse Guild. Our current corps of volunteers consists of 600 volunteers who contribute to the success of the organization and carry on the legacy of service of the organization’s founders.

Job summary:
- Provides appropriate information to assist the LPN Charge Nurse in the preparation and maintenance of an effective patient care plan.
- Involves patient and/or family in care of patient as appropriate.
- Perform EKG’s, venipuncture, process specimens and transmits to contracted laboratory.
- Maintain patient flow in busy clinic practice.
- Prepare patient for medical visit, escort patients into exam room, assist providers with obtaining patient histories.
- Perform measurement of all vital signs and other screening duties as indicated.
- Previews patient charts of assigned provider ensuring all lab results, consult reports etc. are available in EMR prior to visits
- Document care provided or procedures performed on the electronic patient medical record.
- Assist physician with patient examinations and procedures
- Apprises manager to reorder when supplies reach par level.
- Maintains logs and required checks as indicated.
- Complete assigned specialty referrals and diagnostic imaging orders.
- Complete physician paperwork, including outgoing mail and faxes.
- Process prior authorization requests of medications and procedures/treatments ordered.
- Sterilize instruments using autoclave machine.
- Maintains infection control practices in between patients and after sessions are completed.
- Educates patients accordingly as directed by provider or other licensed medical professional.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and coworkers.
- Maintain current CPR for Healthcare Providers.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Greet patients, register and schedule patients for both in-house and outside appointments according to established protocols.
- Assist patients to complete all necessary forms and documentation including medical insurance.
- Ensure complete and accurate registration, including patient demographic and current insurance information.
- Inform patients of medical office procedures and policy.
- Answer incoming calls and deal with inquiries.
- Collect co-pays and payments.
- Report statistics as required.
- Obtain external medical reports as required by medical professionals
- Maintain ongoing tracking and appropriate documentation on referrals to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety. This tracking may use an IT database.
- Contact review organizations and/or insurance companies to ensure prior approval requirements are met.
- Assist patients in problem solving potential issues related to the health care system, financial or social barriers (e.g., request interpreters as appropriate, transportation services or prescription assistance).
- Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information.
- Maintains operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Ensure reception area is well maintained, neat and clean.
- Adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, management and peers.
- Requires frequent bending and lifting and carrying of items weighing up to twenty pounds unassisted, including patient transfers when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precaution to establish a safe work environment.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Responsible for maintaining the privacy of patient, client or protected member health information.
Qualifications:
- Certified graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Prior experience preferably in an ambulatory care setting, with demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy and EKG.
- Meets local, State and Federal health status and certification requirements.
- Current BLS CPR certification for Healthcare Providers.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge utilizing an Electronic Medical Record system preferred.

Take the M57 Bus to West End Avenue between 63rd and 64th Streets.
Take the A, B, C or D to 59th Street Columbus Circle. Walk north on Broadway to 62nd Street. Travel west along 62nd Street to Amsterdam Avenue. Take Amsterdam Avenue to 64th Street. Make a left on 64th Street, we are located at 250 on the south side of the street.
