ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteers will help maintain the trail counters located along designated park trails and in parking lots within the Brandywine Valley unit of First State National Historical Park. Volunteers can either hike, bike, or ride to the trail counters on the park trails when going to check on the conditions of the trail counters. Volunteers will utilize a data collection device to gather data from the trail counter on a weekly basis. Volunteers will monitor and document problems with the trail counters (i.e., overgrown vegetation, counter box left unsecured, vandalism, etc.). Volunteers will also inspect the trees that the trail counters are attached to and will document and report any concerning signs related to the health of the trees. Volunteers will ensure that the trail counter boxes are locked and secured before leaving the area.

It is preferred that a person in this role is able to routinely volunteer on the same day each week to keep the trail counter data collection consistent.
