This position is located in Cape Lookout National Seashore at either 1) the Great Island Cabin Camp on South Core Banks or 2) the Long Point Cabin Camp on North Core Banks. Volunteers will stay in a cabin on a remote barrier island. During their stay, they will provide simple and routine work involved in the maintenance of facilities, assisting cabin renters and other visitors, and providing after-hours assistance to visitors in the cabin camp. Caretakers are on duty from Wednesday to Sunday, from10:00am - 6:00pm and must remain in the camp during these hours. Caretakers are on-call 24 hours a day. Volunteers will only be able to do two week stays.
MAJOR DUTIES
Remains "on-call" to provide visitors assistance, as needed, in the cabin camp after cabin office hours (after 3:00 PM). Calls 911. This will dispatch Visitor and Resource Protection.
Carries park cell phone 24-hours a day to respond to emergencies.
Cleans and stocks public bathhouse (restrooms and showers) at least twice a day. Stock with toilet paper, remove trash, ensure cleanliness throughout the day.
Greet ferry passengers (who arrive between 10:00am - 6:00pm) and assist with basic information and issuance of ORV driving permits. Volunteers will only issue ORV decals after cabin office has closed.
Patrols cabin camp area, picking up and disposing of litter.
Assist fee staff as needed.
Greets visitors and provides information and assistance with ORV permits.
Volunteers MAY NOT sell ice or gas to anyone at any time.
Schedule
Volunteers will ride a park service boat over on Wednesday and assisting with cabin camp area. They will be scheduled for 10:00am to 6:00pm Thursday to Saturday. On Sunday, they will ride the park service boat back to Harkers Island. Wednesday through Saturday night, volunteers will stay at the Great Island Caretakers Cabin and remain on all for emergencies. This position reports directly to Visitor and Resources Protection.
Housing
Volunteers will live in the caretaker’s cabin within the cabin camp on the barrier island. Running water and electrcity is provided. There is no internet. Shared mainland housing, which includes laundry facilities, is available on Harkers Island during days off. Children and pets are not allowed. NON-VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STAY IN VIP HOUSING!
