English Translator / Proofreader

ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Headquarters

This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Communications (COMM) department. This is a 100% virtual (volunteer-from-home) opportunity based in the United States.

The Translator / Proofreader volunteer will work closely with the Multicultural Communications Director to translate, and review written or spoken materials from one language. *You must be a subject-matter expert in linguistics and translation, and adapt translations depending on the cultural approach.

Responsibilities:

  • Proofread machine-translated materials and make edits to preserve the original meaning and intent.
  • Translate/proofread internal and external documents upon request and on an on-call basis.
  • Utilize translation software for efficiency and consistency.
  • Adhere to Red Cross translation guidelines and terminology, ensuring completed work follows established standards.
  • Consult with subject matter experts to understand specialized concepts to translate them appropriately.

Time Commitment:

  • 5-15 hours per month to translate/proofread documents; (morning and/or evening, EST)

Volunteer Frequency:

  • Monthly

Length of Appointment:

  • Minimum 6-12 months, renewable.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, interpretation, philology or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and verifiable professional experience (for example, professional certification in translation or translation portfolio,).
  • Experience translating from Spanish to English
  • Exceptional proofreading, grammar, and writing skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Ability to identify errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and style.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft Word.
  • Must have a phone, computer, and internet connection.
  • Submission of resume and translation samples.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be based in the United States

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge in context maintenance, glossaries, specialized language resources (corpus, dictionaries, terminology databases) and terminology research.
  • Experience with machine and translation memories (TM)
  • Interest in pursuing further education/training in the language and translation services industry.
