ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Congaree National Park preserves the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the United States. The park has 10 hiking trails, including a 2.6-mile Boardwalk, as well over 15-miles of canoe trail. Last year, Congaree received about 250,000 visitors. The park has one visitor center, located at 100 National Park Rd, Hopkins, SC 29061. This is where nearly all visitors begin their trip, and where the majority of the park's trails begin.

Visitor Services Volunteers greet park visitors and help ensure they have a safe and enjoyable visit by providing trail information and recommendations. Most Visitor Services Volunteers stay near the visitor center, though they may also choose to rove, or walk the trails. While roving, volunteers may answer questions and provide orientation to hikers.

Notes about this position:

  • Visitor Services Volunteers are not required to volunteer a set number of hours per week or month. Many volunteers have a day on which they volunteer every week, while others fill in whenever they are available.
  • Training periodically offered to Visitor Services Volunteers includes American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid. This training is not a requirement; however, it is encouraged.

More information about the park may be found here: Congaree National Park (U.S. National Park Service)
