TITLE: Digital Inclusion Intern/Volunteer
LOCATION: Elizabeth, New Jersey
DURATION: Intern: One Semester term. Volunteer: 6 months minimum commitment.
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.
SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK: The IRC in New Jersey seeks interns/volunteers to support digital literacy learning among adult refugees and immigrant learners. The intern/volunteer will assist the Education and Learning manager and adult education supervisor to support computer lab inventory, assist clients with internet services applications, and provide technology education.
DESIRED QUALITIES:
* Experience working with adult learners from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
* High functioning skills in finding resources, troubleshooting, and extremely high attention to details.
* Reliable, responsible, and dedicated to the position until the end of the term.
* Fluency or familiarity with Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Haitian Creole, or Swahili is a bonus, but not required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Maintain the computer lab and inventory of technology equipment.
* Set up new laptops for clients.
* Support clients for internet applications, including applying for Xfinity Essentials or other affordable internet plans with other internet providers.
* Navigate approval process with internet service providers.
* Troubleshoot issues with the internet providers during the application process.
* Take clients to internet provider stores to pick up modems or other equipment.
* Schedule technician for clients for in-home internet installation.
* Assist clients in developing digital literacy skills, including the use of essential applications such as email, access online classes via Zoom, and internet bill payment.
* Perform data entry on the internal system - Efforts to Outcomes (ETO).
* Other administrative work assigned.
* Willing to travel to Elizabeth for onsite work.
This position reports to the Adult Education Supervisor and Education and Learning Manager.

Through our Family Education programs, we promote early self-sufficiency among newly arrived adults, and longer term, ongoing support for continuing education, career development, and citizenship preparation.
- Immigration - The IRC provides high-quality, low-cost immigration legal services, filing applications and petitions for adjustment of status, Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals (DACA), family reunification, and naturalization applications.
