Let your inner child out through song and dance and become a Storytime Assistant! Volunteers help the storytime presenter with greeting and signing in parents and children for storytime and monitoring the door to make sure the group size does not exceed occupancy limits. Other duties may include: assisting with storytime set-up and cleaning toys. Volunteers don’t lead storytimes or read books to patrons.

Location: Hillsdale Library, 1525 SW Sunset Blvd, Portland, OR 97239

Time Commitment: Weekly, for a minimum of 3 months. Please note, there may be breaks due to holidays or staff planning.

Available shifts

  • Thursdays - Book Babies, 10:00-11:30 AM
  • Fridays - Toddler Storytime, 10:00-11:45 AM

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing the room for storytime
  • Welcome children and adults to storytime
  • Make name tags
  • Participate in storytime and model activities to adults
  • Hand out books during the program
  • Assist with cleaning toys after storytime
  • Assist staff with attendees as needed

Skills & Qualifications

  • Reliability and ability to commit to volunteering every week
  • Welcoming & respectful of people from all cultures, backgrounds, and types of families
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to an unstructured environment
  • Ability to get up and down from the floor
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Minimum 18 years or older
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to volunteering.
  • Ability to fluently speak and read Spanish and English for Hora de Cuentos
