Flagstaff Area National Monuments is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help with a variety of Visitor Services! Primary duties will include staffing a busy visitor center, collecting park fees, and providing outstanding information/orientation services. Secondary Duties may include ringing up bookstore sales for nonprofit partner Western National Park Association (WNPA) and roving park trails providing informal interpretation and a friendly park presence in any of the three Flagstaff monuments. Training is provided to set you up for success! A Federal Tier 2 background check is required and will be included in this position.
Opportunity Duration: 4-month minimum commitment. Ideal time frames are March - June, July - October, or November - February. Opportunity can be extended beyond these time frames or to a year-round position if desired.
Work Schedule: 4 days a week (32hrs) for individuals, 3 days a week (24hrs) per volunteer if in same housing unit - 8:30am- 5:00pm - exact days to be determined
Housing: Private RV pad with water and electric hookups or a private room in shared park housing. Determined by applicant needs and housing availability.
Duty Site and Housing Location: Flagstaff, a city of about 75,000 residents and all services available. Sunset Crater Volcano is located about 10 miles north of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon is 3 miles east of Flagstaff, and Wupatki is 30 miles north of Flagstaff.
Weather and Elevation: Sunset Carter Volcano and Walnut Canyon are at an elevation of about 7,000 ft and has weather similar to the city of Flagstaff. Wupatki is located at an elevation of about 5,000 ft and tends to be 10-15 degrees warmer than Flagstaff with less precipitation.
Connectivity: There is little to no cell phone coverage near the visitor centers and housing at Sunset Crater and Wupatki. Walnut Canyon does have moderate cell phone coverage. Plans are in place to install Star Link internet for all park housing at no cost to VIPs by the end of 2024. VIPs will also have access to government computers and internet in the visitor center after a background check has been completed and federal ID card is issued.
