Marine Life Exhibit Maintenance Technician

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Major Duties

Conduct regular maintenance on the Marine Life Exhibit, including cleaning equipment, changing filters, adding and removing water, and testing water quality. Prepare and administer food and prescribed supplements and medications to exhibit residents. Log activities and observed conditions. Volunteer will follow written standard operating procedures and will only deviate from those procedures with approval from volunteer supervisor. When professional assistance is not available, and with permission from the volunteer supervisor, volunteer may troubleshoot specific equipment failures and advise or implement repairs. Likewise, when professional assistance is not available, volunteer may provide advice on species compatibility and care and identify and correct behavioral problems, illnesses, and injuries. Though staff are always nearby to offer support, the volunteer may perform tasks alone or in a two-person team. Volunteer may take occasional trips to island locations to explore the natural environment the exhibit replicates.


Time Commitment

Volunteers are expected to contribute at least one 2-hour shift every two weeks for at least one year. Shifts will be scheduled by the volunteer supervisor and will generally fall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on weekdays. Weekly shifts are encouraged, especially for new volunteers, to facilitate building skills and knowledge about the exhibit.
