Campground Host 2025 Season - Prince William Forest Park

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Oak Ridge Campground is a front country camping area consisting of 99 sites suitable for tent camping with 3 comfort stations featuring restrooms, water, and shower facilities. Some sites are suitable for RV campers, though no hookups are available. As campground host, the main duties are to act as a point of contact for campers during their stay by answering questions and aiding visitors as needed. Greet visitors professionally and courteously and assist with campground site location if required. This position is on site and hosts must provide their own RV. Minimum stay is 60 days. Each Host is required to volunteer a minimum of 32 hours a week. Hosts are expected to be on duty Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday. These are times the campground is most utilized. Hosts are the eyes and ears of the campground; they should ensure that campers are following park rules and regulations and report any discrepancies to Visitor Resource Protection (VRP). Communication must be steady between host and Supervisor. Operating Park equipment is a must. Equipment includes a Park vehicle, shovel, wheelbarrow, trash grabbers, broom, and mop.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Desired: Must have a valid driver’s license. Key skills needed for this position are to be organized, have a people friendly attitude, great customer service skills, willingness to work in an outdoor environment and be self-motivated. Previous host experience is encouraged however, not needed. On-site training will be provided. A background check will be performed prior to arrival.

Position Duties :

Greet campers arriving at the campground. Be a friendly and helpful park representative during campers stay. Answer questions, provide information and aiding visitors as needed. Provide a variety of park information to visitors through person-to-person contact to include park rules involving camping, hiking, fishing, park resources and points of interest. Assists visitors with reservations through the Recreation.gov system. Hosts will not accept or handle fee payment transactions.

Perform minor campground maintenance duties: Assist with minor cleaning and stocking of restroom supplies and empty trash cans when staff are not available. Maintain clean campsites, clean fire pits and standing grills, and assist NPS staff, as needed. Works safely and complies with the park's Safety and Health Program and is concerned with the safety of park visitors. Assist in protecting and managing the cultural and natural resources.

Keep supervisor and Visitor Resource Protection (VRP) Rangers informed of any potential law enforcement problems, injuries, and safety issues.

Volunteers may encounter all types of weather from hot and humid, wet, high winds and stormy. Tripping and slipping hazards may be present. Exposure to biting and stinging insects, venomous snakes, nuisance wildlife, and ticks is possible.


Daily

  • Walk through the campground - be the eyes and ears of the area.
  • Visual inspection of all camp sites and restrooms; upon inspection perform light maintenance or custodial duties as needed including stocking supplies and report problems to Visitor Resource Protection.
  • Pick-up litter. Including removing trash from fire pits.
  • Ensure there are no unattended fires; put out as needed or contact VRP.
  • Collect any property items left behind as "Lost & Found’ items.
  • Be on duty and available to campers Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
  • Record Daily hours worked on Volunteer Hours sheet separately for each Host.
  • Document vehicle license plates parked at camp sites. Spreadsheet will be provided.

Weekly

  • Walk campground and remove any tree limbs in the roadway and camp sites.
  • Assure all sites, fire pits and stand-up grills are cleaned out and ready for future campers.
  • Visually inspect for any potential hazards
  • Report any maintenance needs to your supervisor.
  • Turn in Lost and Found items to your supervisor or the Visitor Center.

Monthly

  • Report monthly volunteer hours to the park volunteer coordinator by the 5th day of the following month.

Compensation: This volunteer position provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience within a professional work environment located within a national park. In addition, the position allows an individual to help park visitors and to assist the park in general. Gain customer service and communication skills. Training in a variety of topics may be available. An RV host pad with full hooks is provided. You may be asked by Volunteer Coordinator, Supervisor or Visitor Resource Protection to leave the host site for your safety and the safety of your personal property due to inclement weather or other conditions deemed unsafe. Speak with your supervisor to set up an alternative housing plan.
