This is an exciting opportunity if you love adventure, mountains, working with people, and respectful and positive cultural exchange. As the Sustainable Tourism Volunteer, you will work closely with our artisan partners to support them in hosting visitors to their communities. You will also work closely with tourists and students to educate them about responsible cultural tourism and help them connect to Andean culture and their community hosts. This is a busy, people-facing role, with much of your time spent outdoors and in the mountain villages. There is also lots of opportunity to adapt the role according to your interests, and help in other areas of Awamaki's work. As a Sustainable Tourism Volunteer, you would be expected to:
- Facilitate half-day and multiday tours bringing tourists to visit our partner artisans in their rural villages. Occasional overnights in rural villages.
- Assist with school service-learning groups bringing students to visit half-day and multiday tours bringing tourists to visit our partner artisans in their rural villages; educate students about sustainable travel and volunteering.
- Ensure tourist understanding Awamaki's sustainability standards and responsible tourism guidelines
- Give visitors the opportunity to connect to Awamaki's store, email list and social media
- Learn Quechua phrases in order to better communicate with people in the communities
- Work a minimum of approximately 6 - 9 hours per week at Awamaki's fair trade store in Ollantaytambo (required of all staff and volunteers)
- Take pictures to share on Awamaki's social platforms (required of all staff and volunteers)
An ideal candidate for this position would possess the following qualities:
- Possess strong communications and social networking skills
- Works well with minimal supervision
- Takes initiative in leading and developing tours
- Is respectful and knowledgeable of the indigenous Peruvian culture
- Spanish and English proficiency strongly preferred
Room and board assistance, and complete fee waiver, available for volunteers who stay six months or longer.
