About this opportunity:
As a Camp Counsellor-in-Training / Camp Volunteer, you will be supporting YRES camp staff by helping out in the classroom, supervising camper activities, and fostering a safe and fun learning environment for the campers. You will be assigned to a class of approximately 20 grade school campers and will be working closely with the camp counsellor(s) and other volunteers of the class to execute daily camp schedules. Training will be provided and is mandatory as a condition to volunteer with us at camp.
Position details and eligibility:
- At least 15 years of age at the start of your first shift
- March 10 - 14, 2025 from 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (5 day shift) South Markham Schools
- Complete our hybrid training and pass a training quiz and exam
- Ability to engage in indoor and outdoor academic and sport activities with campers.
- For summer camp: commit to a daily shift by the week, e.g., working the morning shift for one week
Key responsibilities are as follows:
- Assisting camp counsellors in leading small-group activities and team-building exercises.
- Ensuring campers are safe, supervised, and abiding by camp rules at all times; enforce corrective procedures when instructed to by camp counsellors or when situations unconducive to learning or camper safety arise.
- Helping to resolving conflicts in a constructive manner.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the campsite.
- Supporting counsellors with snack and meal preparation.
- Communicating feedback and suggestions for camp operation improvement.
- Setting a good example for campers - to be a respectful and enthusiastic learner.
Volunteer requirements:
- Dedication and passion toward all-round language, STEAM, and sports education and helping the community.
- Proactivity to engage in activities with the campers.
- Excellent verbal communication skills to communicate with campers, counsellors, and camp directors.
- Ability to work as a team and to accept supervision and guidance.
- Creative and innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required from successful candidates age 18 or above. A volunteer letter will be provided after position is confirmed but the cost will not be reimbursed.
Assets:
- Experience in teaching, being a camp volunteer, and/or working with children.
- Fluency in more than one language (encompassing reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities).
