About New York Marine Rescue Center

Location:

467 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the New York Marine Rescue Center is to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including rescue, rehabilitation, education, and research. Our mission is to provide a sustainable response effort for marine mammals and sea turtles stranding throughout New York; operate the only facility in New York permitted to rehabilitate marine mammals and sea turtles; collect sound science to help identify stranding trends, highlight viruses and continue to protect endangered and threatened species; and encourage conservation and stewardship of the marine environmental through scientific research and public educational programs.

Description

The New York Marine Rescue Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located at Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, NY. Our facility is equipped to house and treat the many species of marine mammal and sea turtle that are present in New York's waters. If an animal is sighted and seems to be in distress, members of our staff will go to the scene and attempt to rescue the animal. The animal is then transported to our facility where they will undergo testing to determine what treatments are necessary for their rehabilitation process. It is our goal for our patients to have an eventual release back into the wild. The rehabilitation process varies for each individual animal and may range from 3 to 9 months of hospital care.

In addition to rehabilitation and education, the New York Marine Rescue Center engages in research.
