Hurricanes Helene and Milton impact showed how vulnerable we all are to losing our homes, belongings, and livelihoods every year. Services and resources were strained before the storms to meet the needs of the homeless. With these disasters, their impact on housing inventory, and the new enforcement laws, it will be devasting to those newly homeless after these disasters .

A critical need in our county is a safe place for people to get help and get housed. That is what we provided with our day shelter, The Lighthouse. We have an opportunity to do more for our homeless neighbors and help people recover from crises.

Mission Statement

Established in 2020, Be a Light Mission Service Center, Inc. is a faith-based, 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to rebuilding lives and restoring hope through programming targeting the challenges of homelessness and its causes. Our mission is to support, encourage, and empower people experiencing poverty and homelessness in their journey to independent, sustainable living as an expression of our faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Description

We are on a mission. Our target state is housing. It hurts us every time we have to tell a neighbor it is time to go when we know they have nowhere to stay. It destroys us to have someone ask for help finding recovery and we can’t move fast enough to bring them resources. They are ready for rehab. They have detoxed in the woods and are trying to stay sober. But they are in an environment that fosters more use and abuse. And they go back. We need to evolve from being "the heart" to being a "dispatcher". Leverage our culture of care and grace ("the heart") and add more connections to bring services faster ("the dispatcher"). This model means having onsite, dedicated resources from our partners, not just referrals. For example, access to mental health and urgent care onsite instead of sending people to an ER for a non-emergency.

We are looking for partners in this vision to establish a housing program offering support for basic needs, healthcare, and recovery. We need land for housing units. We need a building for a thrift store, pantry, and food service work program. We need a home to welcome our neighbors. We need partners who want to bring their services in to help our neighbors. We need funding to launch and maintain this program. There are thousands of people in Pasco County that at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness who need this support. Join us in this mission to reduce homelessness in our community with dignity and grace.
