Job Description:
A rheumatologist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases that affect the joints, muscles, bones, and immune system. Rheumatologists treat autoimmune and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, and osteoarthritis. They focus on improving the quality of life for patients by managing symptoms and slowing disease progression.
Start date: January 6, 2025
Time commitment: 2 to 6 hours per week
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and treat rheumatic diseases through physical exams, laboratory tests, and imaging studies.
- Develop and implement personalized treatment plans, including medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment as needed to manage chronic conditions effectively.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and primary care physicians.
- Educate patients about their conditions, treatment options, and long-term disease management strategies.
- Participate in research or teaching activities, especially in academic or hospital settings.
- Stay updated on advancements in rheumatology and contribute to the development of new treatments.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Completion of an internal medicine residency program (3 years).
- Completion of a rheumatology fellowship program (2-3 years).
- Active medical license in the practicing jurisdiction.
- Board certification in rheumatology (optional but preferred).
- Clinical experience during residency and fellowship training.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and managing a wide range of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to create effective treatment plans.
- Empathy and interpersonal skills to build trust and maintain long-term patient relationships.
