Job Description:
A geriatrician is a medical doctor specializing in the care of older adults, focusing on their unique health needs and complex medical conditions. They manage age-related diseases, chronic conditions, and the overall physical, mental, and social well-being of elderly patients. Geriatricians often collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Start date: January 6, 2025
Time commitment: 2 to 6 hours per week for the volunteer teaching assistant
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and treat medical conditions common in older adults, such as dementia, arthritis, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular diseases.
- Develop and manage personalized care plans for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
- Assess the patient’s functional status, cognitive abilities, and psychosocial needs.
- Prescribe medications, ensuring safe and effective use while minimizing drug interactions.
- Collaborate with families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary teams to support holistic care.
- Educate patients and caregivers about health maintenance, disease management, and prevention strategies.
- Participate in end-of-life care planning and provide palliative care when necessary.
- Stay updated on advances in geriatric medicine and implement evidence-based practices.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Completion of a residency program in internal medicine or family medicine (3 years).
- Completion of a geriatrics fellowship program (1-2 years).
- Active medical license in the practicing jurisdiction.
- Board certification in geriatrics (optional but preferred).
- Clinical experience during residency and fellowship training.
- Empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity to build trust with elderly patients.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Proficiency in managing multiple comorbidities and polypharmacy.
